Mass-Mass Lab Results

The purpose of this lab was to have students practice stoichiometry.  Hydrochloric acid reacted with sodium hydrogen bicarbonate (NaHCO3, or baking soda) to form carbon dioxide, water, and sodium chloride (NaCl, or salt).  By using the amount of baking soda in grams they started with and the equation below, students could calculate the amount of sodium chloride they should have ended up with.  This was the accepted value and the amount made in lab was the experimental value.  % error was calculated.  % errors for 2007 were 0%, 2%, 4%, 4.3%, 23.5%, 26%, and 55%.

Equation:  HCl + NaHCO3 --> NaCl + H2O + CO2
