This lab was meant to reinforce students understanding of the structure of the
DNA molecule by having them construct one of straws and cheerios. Cheerios
represented the sugar, red straws represented the phosphate group, and 4
different color straws represented the 4 nitrogen bases A, C, G, and T.
Students were graded on the lab questions and whether or not their base pairs
matched up correctly. Later on, one strand of their DNA was transcribed
and translated to review the steps involved in protein production.
